Stellenbosch Activities

There are ample leisure and sightseeing experiences within a few minutes of Oude Werf, with various guided tours available via the Stellenbosch 360 Tourism Centre in Market Street. Some include…

Heritage architecture

The town has the largest concentration of surviving period buildings in South Africa, from fine examples of signature gabled Cape Dutch to Georgian and Victorian, seen in places like picturesque Dorp Street. Churches like the neo-gothic Moederkerk designed by a sometime resident of the Hotel and South Africa’s most famous church architect, Karl Hager, are one of many to view.

Museums & historic sites

A visit to the fascinating Village Museum complex is a must for those wishing to see ‘living’ Stellenbosch history. Its 3 famous properties have been restored and decorated to capture various periods of the town and each has its own highly informative costumed guide. The Toy & Miniature Museum, the Kruithuis and the Stellenbosch University Museum are but a few of the many sites that offer heritage exhibits.

Art & craft venues

Stellenbosch is blessed with an amazing variety of Fine Art and Craft venues, in a town with public sculpture and art on every corner. Among some of the most important Fine Art collections are those of the Sasol Art Gallery and the Rupert Art Museum. There are no less than 8 commercial galleries near the Hotel, with works from Cape landscapes to contemporary painting, print, sculpture, ceramics and objets d’ art

Church Street and its environs offer some of the town’s most varied shopping experiences with goods from apparel and local leather, to local craft, jewellery, accessories, books and souvenir mementos. Oom Samie’s shop of ‘curiosities’ in Dorp Street is the town’s oldest and most unique. For more on shopping, see Oude Werf’s ‘Best of the Bosch’ guide.

Food & wine

The vibrant dining culture of Stellenbosch offers choices for almost any taste, from a quick gelato or an artisanal chocolate to the best of bistro easy-eating or restaurant connoisseur cuisine. There are endless opportunities to sample the region’s many flavours and to quaff the best of the wine ‘capital’ even before you explore its surrounding estates.

For much of the year, Stellenbosch boasts entertainment from top local theatre to serious and popular music. The town’s ‘Woordfees’ cultural festival is but one of many events, and no Winelands’ summertime visit is complete without enjoying a show under the stars at open-air arenas like the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre. See our Cape Events Calendar for upcoming shows.
